Vittoria

19 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EE, Edinburgh

Beware their lunch menu... very bad deal. The portions are tiny. We thought it was a joke when the micro sized pizzas arrived. In the end we had to go for a dessert at the Elephant House next door as we were still hungry... With so many great lunch deals to choose from in the area (including the excellent Cafe Sardi's) we certainly won't be back...

Bangalore Tandoori Restaurant

52 Home Street, EH3 9NA, Edinburgh

1 from Rajeev (13%) on May 9th, 2008 (1 week ago)

One of the worst restuarants I have been to in Edinburgh. Me and couple of my friends went for dinner but left half way through due to the exemplary rude behaviour of the staff. Suggestion for people visiting the restaurant.

You have to order the starters along with the main dish - chef won't cook otherwise. Attitude.

Minimum order otherwise you will not be served but nothing is mentioned about this in the menu.

If you question the staff about the service? Sir Do you see we have so many staff employed here and we have to pay them. So we will have to rip you off for meeting our operational costs.

Surprised the restaurant is still in business.

Old Penang

21 Dalziel Place, EH7 5TP, Edinburgh

It's hard to find a place where you get great asian food just like you would be served if you were in Thailand, but the Old Penang does it.

Apex Metro

Apex Hotel, EH1 2HS, Edinburgh

On Sunday night, 7 of us got together for a nice meal before enjoying the night on town, but this wasn't QUITE the start we envisaged.

The service was hit and miss. Although we had booked on an offer, the waiter first of all told us that the offer was over and had to go and check. It then took quite a bit of work to sort out the wine - even when asked "what the grape was" for the wine on offer, we got the highly detailed "red" or "white". Not QUITE what we were looking for. When the drinks did arrive (which was pretty prompt), we were asked did we want drinks... 5 secs after the SAME waiter had served us. There's hard sells, and there are hard sells. And then there are silly attempted sells.

The food was up to the usual standard, but the plating could have been slightly better. Although it was tasty, a think a second slice of beef would have been a nice touch - even if it was part of an offer! How much extra would it have cost? Really!

Prior to this, I've always had a great meal at any of the Apex hotels, and I'll assume this was a glitch in the normal high standard. I will be back again.

I have been a few times and have actually written to complain about the slow service. I did not even get a reply , but I may now go back to find out if it has imrpoved to an acceptable level. Shame as the food was always quite good.

Definitely going back!

Great food, good service. A bit pricey, but was expecting that. Extensive drinks menu, but not many non-alcoholic drinks (this becomes an issue when pregnant!). Try sister restaurant - Roti - round the corner for good Indian food without the price tag.

Coconut Grove

3 Lochrin Terrace, EH3 9QJ, Edinburgh

2.5 from selle (10%) on May 6th, 2008 (1 week ago)

Went as a small group for a friends party. Unfortunately most of the rest of the place was taken by a large and very rawkus student group. Food was OK, but not particularly memorable. A couple who came in part way through the evening walked straight out. BYOB will appeal to students.

Centotre

103 George Street, EH2 3ES, Edinburgh

I totally agree with mike and lynn.

my party of 14 arrived at this resturant and on first impressions were taken by the interior of the building which looked great. Unfortunately the rest of the night was more like a nightmare.

Food as just awful and I would go so far as to say disgraceful. The food was not cheap but we would have happily paid the higher rates given the location had the food been edible.

Lasagne was completely burned to a crisp - charcoal on top and it was the manager of the resturant who actually served it to one of my party!!! When a substitute was provided it was bland and presented with tin foil round the edge of it... more like a bad ready made meal for one!

This Italian couldnt even get the pizza right. Base was extremely dry and actually split in half it was so over cooked. There was no sauce on the goats cheese pizza only crumbled cheese and lots of rocket - just terrible. When only 3 out of our 14 could stomach eating their dinner I complained to the waiter and asked to speak to the manager. The very nice waiter had to ask the manager 3 times to please come and deal with us, as she kept ignoring us and walking past the table.

After a 15 minute wait she came over and I explained our disappointment. She shrugged, made no excuse and went to see the owner. When she returned she explained that was the way food was served here (I did question the fact that she served the lasagne completely burned - was this normal?) but she agreed to discount our meal in the end. I left the resturant completely starving and very disappointed.

Petit Paris

38-40 Grassmarket, EH1 2JU, Edinburgh

3.5 from irishphat (71%) on May 6th, 2008 (1 week ago)

Went here for a family meal on Sunday. Was ushered downstairs by the french speaking staff. Very friendly I found. We had booked so there was no waiting.

Service was quite quick but there were no beers on the menu and thankfully I spotted a chap with a Kronenburg. We had 5 different starters.

Mussels - tasty

Rabbit Terrine - awful

Black Pudding - good

Escargot - very garlicy - not much snail to taste - nice though if you like garlic

Brie in filo pastry - very nice

Needless to say we all tried all of these.

When it came to mains though there was less to choose from that looked good. I nearly had the bouilliabase and chickened out for the steak as did 2 of my fellow diners. One had Monkfish, which was fine (comes with mussels - not mentioned on menu) and the final person had lamb. The mains were ok but the starters were much more enjoyable. The veg was universally approved of.

My steak was quite fatty - more rump than sirloin to be honest.

The desserts were quite varied, we had one person on cheesboard (not great) creme brulee (very nice) choc tart x2 (good) and crepes - very nice.

All in all it was mostly very nice. Our experience was tainted by screaming 2 years olds 5 feet away (2 of them) and this was at 8.30 - 10 pm on a Sunday.

I'm sure many people love it, personally I found the mains to be mediocre. With great starters and deserts it may not be enough to get me to go back.

The bill was about £160.
