Restaurant Martin Wishart
54 Shore, EH6 6RA, Edinburgh
from DrKolarBear (21%) on July 2nd, 2008 (2 weeks ago)
Martin Wishart is a man who should be king. Of the kitchen. The food here is as elegant as a fever of stingrays migrating across the seas which also uncannily resembles the service. Quiet, efficient, charming but deadly. The food appears to have been romanced and the produce selected by jedi. If you have a bad meal here then there is something wrong with you and not Monsieur Wishart.

The food here is tremendous and reminiscent of an Edinburgh gentrified version of Fergus Henderson's heroic St John in London. Lunchtime prices are obscenely low and the pork belly made me want to rear pigs and hang them myself.

I went here a few weeks ago with my parents for lunch. It was OK but I doubt I would go again.
I would just like to point out that most of the previous reviews listed here are in relation to their dinner menu. Their lunch menu, on the other hand, is a strange mix. I had haggis which was fine but my Dad had some form of herb soup - can't remember what exactly but it didn't taste very nice. Desert selection was poor - opted for jelly and ice cream and, quite frankly, have had ten times better at a kiddie's birthday party.
As I have heard more good reviews than bad I would possibly give "Dogs" the benefit of the doubt and return to sample their dinner menu. However, as a result of my most recent visit I certainly won't be rushing back anytime soon.

Pink Olive
55-57 West Nicolson Street, EH8 9DB, Edinburgh

from rachybaby (75%) on July 1st, 2008 (2 weeks ago)
I went here on Sunday and had a very satisfying brunch to kickstart my day. Decor is fresh and bright but, with one flaw, why oh why the huge tacky banners out the front? It is already clear what the restaurant is called so absolutely no need for the cheapo banners which make it look naff.
ANYWAY, apart from that, I had a very enjoyable experience at Pink Olive. Brunch was very tasty - I went for the fry up, full of calories I would assume but minus the copious amounts of oil you get in most eateries serving fry up breakfasts. Just the right sized portion too. Also, very reasonably priced at only £5.
Another nice touch was the large selection on Sunday papers for all to read. Haven't tried the dinner menu yet but plan to return sometime soon to give it a try.
Highly recommended and a welcome addition to the Newington area.

They say you should judge a place by there toilets if this is the case I would not like to see inside their kitchen.
1. Rude staff with attitude.
2. Filthy toilets (Male & Female)
3. If you like frozen oven chips amd mashed garden peas with everything it should be ok for you!

Creelers Seafood Restaurant
3 Hunter Square, EH1 1QW, Edinburgh

I was at Creelers with my girlfriend a couple of months ago now. We had tickets to the opera and chose Creelers for our pre-theatre meal. Whilst it doesn't advertise a pre-theatre menu we found that an early evening menu was on offer. It was hard to overlook as it was considerably cheaper than the a la carte options. I had an exquisite fishcake to start, it was truly remarkable and worthy of gracing the finest of restaurants. To follow I chose the fish pie, perhaps an error as it is similar in type to my choice of starter. The pie was tasty but nothing to rave about.
The most exciting part of the meal was the wine we chose to accompany our meal. Standing out on the wine menu was an English rhubarb wine. It looked interesting and our knowledgeable waitress recommended it, she brought over a sample from the bar before I made the plunge and ordered it. According to the menu it is a great companion to smoked fish, this turned out to be sound judgment.
A bright, fresh, well established place. Reasonably high prices but the quality of ingredients and assurance of a good meal make it almost justifiable. Perhaps a good place to take the in-laws rather than a venue for a pre-drinking social gathering.

I had the pleasure of dining with the now legendary "andy" at The Dogs (see his review above for menu chat). I have rated this restaurant slightly higher than Andy, mainly for the quality of the eating experience. I found The Dogs to be more than just a no-nonsense fashionable eatery. Our waitress was polite but at the same time relaxed and familiar. The decor is homely, it was more like going around to a friend's for supper than eating out in a restaurant. Perhaps the hype will hurt this place, it would be truly wonderful to have discovered The Dogs hidden away in an unfashionable part of town. As it is, the restaurant has some big recommendations to live up to. I was not disappointed and definitely plan to go back.

I usually love takeaway from this place but they just mucked up my order and I'm peeved. tut tut. But usually a great place to eat. Get the prawn toast... it's like nothing you've had before. if you want a vegetable noodle dish you may need to scream VEG! down the phone... don't let this discourage! :)

Diner 7

This is a good eating spot. Leith is ace and this place fits right in. It is small and friendly, serving American/Pub-type food. I had a burger, as did most of my companions. It perhaps wasn't the absolute greatest burger I had ever had but it had good clean flavour and was not too greasy. Very reasonably priced too - 4 main courses, 3 puddings, a bottle of wine and some coffees = £63. An excellent spot for an informal, chatty meal.
