I wasnt sure about this place - as I walk past it almost everyday on the way to work and the colours alone put me off even going inside.
I did however go there at the weekend and had one of the best meals I have had in a long time. The pasta is amazing (I had it with Calamari), pizzas and also the chicken kebabs looked very tempting. It isnt too cheap (£10-12 for a pasta main, £10-13 for a pizza) but it is still worth paying that wee bit more for the quality of the food and also the laid back surroundings
The staff here are also super nice which made the meal we had there.
On a Sunday it is BYO with no corkage (I think they do this Sun-Wed) which is brilliant as there seem to be fewer and fewer good BYO restaurants in Edinburgh

I agree with Rachybaby this place is well worth a visit although it is expensive with most mains being around £15-20.
The lay out is great at there are lots of booths so even being there as a part of six which we were you dont feel like there is anyone else in the restaurant.
I have the mussels to start with and the portion size was HUGE! I thought they had brought my main instead. Others had the duck salad, pate and for mains we had mainly steaks, Beef Wellington and fish and chips but all looked very good.
Its a nice place for a special occasion - or if you want your parents to take you somewhere nice!

I've eaten here on two occassions, both of which I have enjoyed immensley. The food was very good, very reminiscent of the food of Bilbao from last year's trip! The wine we chose (rose) was very nice, especially for around £13 a bottle. The first time we went we used the Telegraph 50% off food offer and the second time Tesco clubcard vouchers. I will be returning!

Abstract

The food was very good, the wine pleasant (even the house red) and the service was good except... somewhere along the line on a moderately busy Saturday night they managed to forget our main courses! It took a reminder from us for them to realise this and after a gap of around an hour they were eventually served. The waiting staff were very good and the the price of the main courses wiped from the bill but as it was supposed to be a special occasion the night was a little spoilt.

First visited when I moved up here to work at the airport. That was three years ago and I still go back now even though I live about 15 miles away. In my opinion it's the best in the area, and one of the best I've ever been to (and I've lived in Luton!).

Centotre

First time at this restaurant. Greeted in an offhand way, and led to a corner table. This in itself proved a blessing, as the venue is a converted banking hall with high ceilings, laid out with close-packed (uncomfortable) plastic seats and tables, and the noise level was too high especially when the jazz music (which I just loathe) started blaring out. So much for pleasant conversation over dinner, then. Zero points for romance, too.
Service was disinterested. Got lukewarm Pellegrino fizzy water poured over ice cubes to cool it - and yes, ice does take the fizz out, waitress. The Focaccine to share was OK, and one order of pizza passable, as was another of Arrabiata pasta. The Contradine however, was unappetising to look at (being grey), and had the texture of gloopy wallpaper paste. Tasted non-descript, too. This was described as orchiette with porcini mushrooms, Sicilian sausage, rocket and cream. It was a real disappointment... especially at the price, for something that costs very little to make. The dining experience at Centotre was poor, as was the ambiance. It reminded me of a school dinner hall, and the layout detracted from the architecture of what was once a fine banking hall interior. One final point, when my designer coat was removed after arrival, I did not realise that it would be put in a place where anyone who fancied it in passing could have taken it. Needless to say, I will not be going to this restaurant again. There are much better Italian ones in Edinburgh, where the food is both recognisable and delicious, the staff are friendly, and the prices are not as pretentious as this restaurant's concept of itself.

Monteith's

I am mixed on Monteiths. I have eaten here twice now and I love the look and feel of the place, the selection of drinks, the friendliness of the staff and the tucked away location.
The food has also been good, on the latest occasion an excellent value and great tasting steak sandwich for Sunday lunch. The previous time I enjoyed a variety of dishes shared amongst the table, particularly good were the sausages and the black pudding mash which was fantastic!
However both times I have been in there has been something to infuriate me and sadly drops this review from 4 stars to 3...
First time the service was pretty slow and on receiving the dishes my dining partner's poached egg still had a quarter of the egg shell on it, which is just tardy on the part of the kitchen. Second time round this past weekend the service was so slow it hurt, taking about half an hour to get the (admittedly good) food to our table, then taking an equally painfully long amount of time to collect the dishes and give us the bill, at which point we found out that despite it being 2 in the afternoon on a Sunday they still hadn't cleared all the transactions through the card machine so we would have to wait 5 minutes if we wanted to pay for a meal for 5 people on plastic, very far from ideal.
So much potential in here but sadly doesn't seem to have got it quite right yet.

The feel of this place is nice, lots of people coming and going, sitting together to eat, it felt like there was a nice community spirit about it however I can't help but feel that it makes its money from the feel of the place as opposed to the food offering. Quality was nothing short of ok, I certainly wouldn't choose it over anything else I have had in town, or stuff I could cook myself, in fact given the choice I would much rather visit one of the many food shops in the vicinity and knock myself up a sandwich for a couple of quid than spend 3 times that on something that tastes little better. Myself I had the Falafel plate which consisted of 2 salads of my choosing- one of which was a grated carrot offering and the other a bog standard pasta salad. Accompanied by a paltry 3 Falafel which again were ok but hardly packed a punch in terms of flavour. Accompanying humous good but could have been more garlicky, Tzatziki pretty horrible. Value was good at £7 for a decent sized portion meal but I can't say it was utterly astounding.
Probably a good place to go if you buy into what the place clearly believes in but not somewhere to go in search of great food.

Bar Diesel
19 Shore Place, EH6 6SW, Edinburgh
from profeta77 (65%) on August 19th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)
Went there for lunch last month and the pub food is just like any other regular pub one: Nachos, steak sandwich, fish'n chips, burgers, etc...
Nothing special. The place was totally empty we were 4 of us, the waitress and the chef.
It was £12 for the Diesel special burger with Onion Rings and Hash Browns. Good portion,

One word: DULL
The food is correct. Not delightful.
Staff is correct, not really friendly but ok.
The place is clean but too much like a chain restaurant.
Prices are ok: Average £8 for a main. £4 for a starter. £15 for a bottle of wine.
I will not go there again.
