The Waiting Room

7 Belhaven Terrace, EH10 5HZ, Edinburgh

3.5 from magda (18%) on November 7th, 2007 (11 months ago)

Food was fine, probably too much oil for some of you, but waiter was annoying, since he was repeatedly asking me if I want a bill, although I was still having my dinner and just ordered another drink.

The Three Coins Cafe

OK, not the best chips, too much vinegar and considering how much vinegar I like that's saying something.

Not a fan of the food, where hippys go when they get old and have money.

Le Monde

16 George Street, EH2 2PF, Edinburgh

3 from irishphat (80%) on November 6th, 2007 (11 months ago)

I've had lunch here a couple of times and it's never as busy as the Living Room or Tiger Lily. There's a reason. It's just not as good.

The atmosphere is a bit 'empty barn'. the service is slow and when I asked the waitress for another menu for someone who would be joining us any minute (politely) she loudly harumphed and to the amusement of my pal was giving me dirty looks the entire meal. Odd.

Anyway the food was pretty good and I have no objection there. Price wasn't bad and all in all it wasn't a bad lunch. I'd still pay the money for Tiger Lily though given the choice.

Not bad but no more than 3 stars.

Britannia Spice

150 Commercial Street, EH6 6LB, Edinburgh

3.5 from irishphat (80%) on November 6th, 2007 (11 months ago)

Ate here ages ago for a chamber of commerce thingy. It was very nice indeed. Highly recommend it.

It is a bit out of the way unless you live in Leith but the service was excellent and the setting was very appealing.

It helps that it was paid for by work by the way so I'd have to go back and pay to really have a strong opinion but I'd imagine you're safe enough if I give it 3.5.

Oh yes I should say it is huge and easily has as much room as old Khushis so you should have no problem getting a table. Big open plan room.

The menu seemed to indicate it was a bit more expensive than Khushis as well.

I wIll go again eventually. If I ever go to Leith again that is.

The Merlin

168 Morningside Road, EH10 4PU, Edinburgh

I've eaten here twice and found it mediocre both times. Had burgers and some sort of chicken dippers and to be perfectly honest I've been half way through and wondered 'why am I here'. No not some sort of existensial conundrum - why am I not in a decent boozer with good grub instead of this location.

It's not such an awful place but there must be better options locally. The Morning Glory for example although I've never eaten there. Next time I will.

Not terrible but why pay for mediocrity.

PS - the pool table is always complicated/broken.

New Bell Restaurant

233-235 Causewayside, EH9 1PH, Edinburgh

3.5 from irishphat (80%) on November 6th, 2007 (11 months ago)

I was here last weekend for dinner. Booked that day and got a nice corner table. There were one or two other empty tables but the chap said Saturdays you wouldn't normally get in if you drop in on spec. Worth a go mind you.

Had a haggis pancake thing to start while herself had something else which I honestly forget now but she was pleased with it. Then I had venison and she had duck. My venison was very tasty. the duck was ok but not sensational. They were presented very well and the rest of the meal was very good indeed. although we forgot to order steam veg and then I felt a bit annoyed they didn't suggest any but not a biggie. We were pretty full anyway.

Dessert was a passion fruit panacotta that was a little odd but tasty while the other half had a pear tart with rosemary ice-cream (odd) they weren't bad desserts but I'm sorry I didn't have something a bit simpler or more conventional.

Best bit of the meals were the starters which makes my forgetting hers a crime of some magnitude. The mains were second with the desserts a distant third.

Despite that it was nice overall, the setting was pleasant (lots of pictures - every table here is different) and the staff were very good. We had a nice australian shiraz (£18), coffees after, I had a coke as well and the whole thing came in at £83 + tip.

Would go again but would and go for simpler desserts.

PS - she had a some sort of pheasant wrapped in bacon with parsnips. It was very nice. I knew I'd remember.

Sabor Criollo

36 Deanhaugh Street, EH4 1LY, Edinburgh

4 from craig777 (69%) on November 5th, 2007 (11 months ago)

As with the previous review this place is such a find. A small intimate restaurant which has good value mexican food. We had 2 courses, shared a pudding and a beer for less than £15. The Calamari was brilliant and the fajitas are as always a popular choice to go for.

Didn't get round to the mojitos but there is always next time!

Cozi Bar and Grill

44 St. Stephen St, EH3 5AL, Edinburgh

3.5 from craig777 (69%) on November 5th, 2007 (11 months ago)

This place has a great mixture of food on the menu from traditional banger and mash to stuffed peppers. Brilliant venue in the winter as the fire is on and the place really is very cozi! Sofas and soft leather seats to chill out on for a Sunday lunch as well as other tables available. Everything is very reasonably priced with main meals ranging from £6-10 with sizable portions.
