A 'Chinese-Japanese' sushi restaurant. Not a fusion of both cuisines thankfully (which one would imagine involves the stir-frying of sushi. Hey, I'd try that!), just an establishment that is both a predominantly sushi restaurant, which also happens to serve Chinese food.
Now, I've never had the Chinese food there, so I can't really judge it on that basis. But the sushi?
Well, for the inexperienced sushi-eater, this place will do you a good introductory course in the art of ordering and eating sushi (even if you don't know your nigirisushi from your maki from your sashimi. And if you're still clueless, just wiki it up on wikipedia, yeah?), which is pretty okay.
Best sushi I've ever had's been in Australia though with it's sizeable Asian community, and the best sushi I've (once) had in Edinburgh was at good ol' (extinct) Yo Sushi. How I miss you Yo Sushi. *sniff*
Word to the wise though, don't tap your chopsticks, DO NOT stick the chopsticks in a bowl of rice (big funeral-related taboo), and lay off the wasabi yeah? Jackass: The Movie, this is not.
Other than that, the nice atmosphere, reasonable prices, friendly staff make the above average fare taste pretty damn good.

Morocco Restaurant
3A1 Dundas Street, EH3 6QG, Edinburgh
from Meng (75%) on August 5th, 2007 (11 months ago)
Do you like belly-dancing?
Do you like ordering a special lamb dish 2 days in advance for a prepatory 24-hour roast cooked to perfection?
Do you like women sashaying to the spices of cumin, mint, the scent of apricots, couscous, spiced lamb and sugared tea?
Well then, this may just be the place for you!
An experience in dining (though the belly-dancing is a welcome distraction considering how long it does take for food to be ordered and arriving on your plate. I've checked, it takes an average of 30-40 minutes. But hey, that's pretty normal for a half-full restaurant right?).
But when it's served, it's hot, spicy, welcome, in big portions and needs plenty sugared mint tea to wash it down.
If you like your food fast and insubstantial I can recommend the Golden Arches just 10 minutes walk down west way, but the Moroccan food here takes time to prepare, and served to you perfectly. Plus if you want to flash your cash and impress friends/family/a hot date, bring them here.
Just stop staring at the jiggling womanflesh and concentrate on your food.

Mussel Inn

How can there not be a review for the one-and-only Mussel Inn on Rose Street? Ha-ha! First post here!
For a chain (there's another in Glasgow) this is pretty good stuff. The fish is pretty okay, but the strength is in the mussels. Kilo pot of mussels with creme, garlic, morrocan, thai, you name it. Gorge it down and swipe with garlic bread. Shell-fish heaven.
So good I have this on my speed-dial (Remember kids, if you want to eat here you have to book in advance. I've once tried to get a table for two in the @rse end of a Monday in winter, and it's still full! obviously very popular, and there's a reason why. A lot of trade tends to be repeat customers hooked on that fresh Scottish seafood catch...)

Petit Paris
17 Queensferry Street, EH2 4QW, Edinburgh
from Meng (75%) on August 5th, 2007 (11 months ago)
Another favourite of mine. I tend to bring my friends there (though obviously they just want to ogle at the continental waitresses with gorgeous accents), but I digress...
Food, like the other Grassmarket establishment, is divine. Every time I've been to either of the Petit Paris establishments, it's never disappointed. Sure, the little-francois decorative tat may seem as unusual as say, going to an irish-themed pub in Shanghai, but hey the food tastes like a little old granny's hidden under the kitchen table (and believe me, it's a small kitchen).
It's worth the wait though, just sit down and order, the food will take its time to be served to you, but when it's served it's like manna from heaven. Home-cooked, on hot plates, with simple mouth-watering ingredients. Unpretentious, and value for money (No £15 quid for a microwave steak you can cook yourself at home here).
Try the fish. The toulouse sausages. The t'art chocolat with creme anglais. Best creme brulee out of Paris (and the creme brulee in paris is pretty merde if you ask me). I'll be seeing you here too.

Petit Paris

A city centre location, with a decent price (if you go during the pre-theatre hours where you a main + coffee deal) or reasonable price outwith the 'discount' hours even.
It's one of my favourite restaurants, and I've practically tried everything on the menu. The fish is superb, and I'm not much of a pisceterian, and the lamb dishes are always cooked to perfection.
Presentation is superb, for the price it's practically a bargain (see if you're willing to pay the same price for the touristy garbage all the other places in the Grassmarket and 'steakhouses' tend to serve), and it comes highly, highly recommended by yours truly. See you there.

Sushiya
19 Dalry Road, EH11 2BQ, Edinburgh
from nettles (91%) on August 3rd, 2007 (11 months ago)
My husband and I had dinner at Sushiya to celebrate an anniversary. I was missing the sushi from back home (NY) so much that it had become necessity to get some. Sushiya is very small, only a few tables and when we arrived there were only two tables empty and both had little reserved cards on them. The waitress came up to us, looked at her watch and said that if we could eat in less than an hour and a half we could have a table. Perfect. The restaurant is small, clean, and simple. On the wall is a little flat screen tv showing wacky japanese tv food programs that are so popular over there.
The menu is not particularly extensive with only 2 selections of the larger mixed rolls. One dragon and one rainbow. I wished they had more of these as these are some of my favourite choices when having sushi. We ordered some sake (we were celebrating you know) and shared a nigiri set, an order of eel, and went for the dragon roll as recommended by our waitress. We actually had more things on order but the chef must have said there was no way two people could eat that much and we took some stuff off. It was a good thing because there was no way we would have been able to get anything else down!
The miso soup that came with the set was nothing special. The eel was very good, no little bones which can be dissapointing and not overpowering. The nigiri set was ok. Fish to rice ratio was good. The fish was fresh, there is no doubt and all was neat and tidy as it should be. The dragon roll was presented well, shrimp tempura with cucumber in an inside out roll draped with avacado which could have been riper, with small dollops of slightly sweet japanese mayonaisse and flying fish roe. It was very nice, the shrimp had cooled a bit and would have been even tastier if it was given to us when the shrimp was still hot to contrast with some of the colder ingredients.
If you are craving sushi sushiya will sate your appetite but if you are looking for outrageous stuff I hope you know where to get it!

La Garrigue

Had a great meal here last night. Two courses for £23.50. After we left we decided that the starters were a bit disappointing, but in retrospect this is perhaps only because the mains were so good! The meat/fish in all our dishes was cooked to perfection and just tasted sooo good!
And the service was impeccable - could not be faulted at all.
Good wine selection. All French, of course. Seemed to be at least 3 of each colour for under £15 so there's plenty to choose from even when you're eating on a budget.

The Sizzling Scot

I ate in this restaurant last week after seeing it advertised. I can only say that the service was very unfriendly and the food was at best average.
I would have said that they bought all their food in from a local supermarket had they not been so insistent it was all "home made" - I wouldn't own up to it if I was them!

New Bell Restaurant

A nice traditional Scottish restaurant with quaint surroundings but modern and friendly team of staff. The prices justify the high standards and quality. They will warn you that the Aberdeen Angus steak and apple crumble may take more than 5 minutes to cook but at least you know then it's been prepared and cooked freshly and they're definitely worth the wait. The cranachan is to die for. I've been back several times now with friends and family and they've all enjoyed.

We made a short notice booking and also changed the time and the staff were really amicable about it all. A really nice restaurant in a good location. Something other than the usual Italians you seem to get the further out of town you go. Food was excellent, price was consistent for the quality of the food. I'd definitely go back ...and they've got a function room.
