Nargile

73 Hanover Street, EH2 1EE, Edinburgh

I dined here as part of a group of 8 and we opted for a banquet style meal. When I arrived there were already a dozen or so plates of starters on the table. I'm not sure if I missed the explanation of each of the dishes or they just didn't bother, but I didn't have a clue what anything was - I suppose I could have asked but the staff didn't seem particularly interested in us despite the restaurant not being very busy. While I like to know what I'm eating, a number of my group were vegetarians so this info was quite important to them.

The same thing happened with the main courses with a range of dishes not so delicately place on our table and very little indication of what exaclty they were - the staff had to be asked which dishes were the vegetarian ones. This also struck me as strange as it would mean that should I want to return in a smaller group I would not know what to order.

On the whole the food was reasonable (whatever it was) and there was plenty of it. The bill came to £34 each including wine - reasonable though perhaps not fantastic value.

Mezbaan South Indian Restaurant

14 -14A Brougham Street, EH3 9JH, Edinburgh

4.5 from jwjlewis (76%) on November 8th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Review One:

A delightful restaurant. I went here with a friend who has long wanted to go, since it appears to be one of the - if not the - only south Indian restaurant in Edinburgh.

We went on a Tuesday and it wasn't particularly busy, but that was certainly no reflection on the restaurant. The service was friendly and prompt to start with. We had lovely starters - I had a kebab. Then came the main course and the purpose of our visit. We each had masala dhosa. For those who don't know (and until I went I counted myself as one such person) a masala dhosa is a a gram flour wrap (a very big one, like a crepe you get on holiday in France) stuffed with filling. In this case the filling was spicy mashed potato with other veg as well. And it was wonderful. Just the right mix of flavours, heat and spice. It comes with coconut chutney and something like dhal (I forget the name). These were the perfect accompaniments.

Once we had finished I had to go in search of the waiter to get the bill, but that wasn't an issue at all. I strongly commend this restaurant to you all. And definitely try the dhosa!

Review Two:

I went here with Andy and my girlfriend for a takeaway and it was delicious. The dishes all tasted slightly different to the usual (British) Indian food you get, and much better for it. They had a peculiar tang, which was scrumptious. The staff were friendly and the price was fine. They appear to have a standard, "that'll be 30mins", but then as we were walking out the waitress said, "oh, this'll probably only take 20mins".

Overall: Go here to eat in or to takeaway and you will not be disappointed. How does it compare to the other greats, like Khushi's and Voujon? It is simply different, and wonderful.

Le Mouton Noir

3 Viewforth, EH10 4JD, Edinburgh

4 from jwjlewis (76%) on November 8th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Bruntsfield has been lacking a really good restaurant and this brand new place certainly fits the bill. I went there last night and had their specials; Cauliflower and stilton soup followed by Bavette de beouf. It certainly did not disappoint. The soup was lovely, thick and creamy and the beef came in a red wine sauce with shallots and mashed potato.

The service was very discreet, just what you want in a sophisticated restaurant. You may be wondering what I mean by discreet; I mean friendly, but not overbearing. So why didn't I just say that? I don't know, I just didn't.

Anyway, this is a lovely little restaurant and I would recommend it to Bruntsfield locals as well as folk from across the city. It would be a great first date venue, or any date come to think of it.
