Assam's Cafe, 1 Albert Place, EH7 5HN, Edinburgh

We had dinner in Assam's Indian restaurant last night, Saturday. There is a delicious smell as you go into the café on the street level. The waitress was very friendly, and offered us a table either in the café, outside or in the basement restaurant. We chose the restaurant, and whilst the café was nicely set out, the basement is really quite special. Nice stone tiles line the stairs, but when you get downstairs to the cellar, there are real stone walls. Not what we expected, much much better. Candlelit dining even as the sun shone outside. Right up our street.

We chose the mince samosa and the chicken poori to start. The samosas were nicely spiced and full of mince. The chickpeas accompanying them were delicious and nicely spiced. The chicken in the poori was in a sweet and sour sauce. Possibly one of the nicest starters we have ever eaten. A wee bit more spice would have made it perfect.

Mains were the Chile Garlic Chicken and the Chicken Karahi, with a portion of rice, garlic nan and spicy chips. Both mains were really nice, chicken through the sauce and not swimming in gee. The garlic nan was large and tasty, whilst the spicy chips were delicious Not as crispy as you would expect from chips, more like a spicy potato in the shape of chips. We've no idea what the seasoning was, but they went beautifully with the main courses.

This restaurant combines excellent food, with superb surroundings and ambience, excellent service from all three waiters who helped us. The toilets were also first class.

We noticed that they do a pre-theatre for £10.50 seven days a week between 15:00 and 18:30.

We probably ordered too much, and would probably share a starter and drop the rice the next time. BYOB helps with the price.

Can't recommend enough.
