What a great restaurant.

The food was excellent, the price was not too expensive and the staff were attentive. I'll definitely be back.

An appalling evening of food and service. I tried to complain about the runny, oily madras sauce which was pretty tasteless. They didn't want to know! Even Gordon Ramsay would struggle with the stubborn staff who think their food is great! I would recommend to stay clear! It's very expensive for the rubbish they serve up, staff have no people skills and will not accept criticism and I'm still so angry at having to pay for the meal!

Great food, service, beautiful atmosphere and conveniently located on the High Street. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. We were new to Indian cuisine so asked waiter for recommendations. He chose for each of us and the food was wonderful. Don't miss this one if you want to enjoy Indian food while in Edinburgh.

Booked a table three days in advance and they had no recollection. The main meal arrived half way through the starter and we were hurried during the course, at one stage even trying to remove a plate before finishing. We had a good experience there before and the food was good but bullying of staff spoiled it for us.

The Bay of Bengal is undoubtedly the WORST Indian restaurant I have ever had the displeasure of entering, never mind eating in... and boy, have I been in a few! It is awful AND at the same time, stupidly expensive. Three friends and I ate there last night (20/03/10) and frankly, should have realised what it would be like in view of the fact that we were the only ones in the place apart from the surly and unhelpful staff. Regrettably, we didn't take heed of the void of people and sat down to a dreadful meal all around. I'll give them one thing though. They managed not to mess up the popadoms and pickles (although the mango chutney was the most vibrant shade of vermillion I've ever seen?). Starters? The onion bhajis were dry and resembled fish cakes. Three supposedly different types of 'kebab' were indistinguishable from one another and consisted of a few pieces of tikka'd lamb and chicken along with a very sorry looking spoonful of salad. All of the curries were awful. They couldn't do me a simple, plain pilau rice. Naans were okay (as were the parathas) but miniscule, and a request for a glass of water had to be repeated several times, surely to the most miserable looking waiter in the land. Piece de resistance were the 'chapatis'! Ha! All they were were the plain flour tortillas you get with an El Paso fajita kit. Definitely the first bit of Mexican food I've ever had in an Indian restaurant, and undoubtedly the last. Cue the next three people to (unfortunately for them) walk through the door. In an otherwise empty restaurant, where are they shown to? You got it in one - the table right next to ours! Nice as they surely were, I'm sure they would have preferred a little more space to themselves. And then there was the bill - £108 for 3x beers, 4x starters, 4x curries, a paratha, a naan and 2x Old El Paso tortillas. An utter rip-off if ever I saw one.

In conclusion, a few choice words (nicely arranged in alphabetical order for you) that should fully sum up and draw a clear picture of The Bay of Bengal: abhorrent, atrocious, awful, bad, base, beastly, contemptible, cursed, despicable, disgusting, foul, grim, gross, heinous, hellish, horrible, horrid, loathsome, lousy, nauseating, obnoxious, odious, offensive, repellent, reprehensible, repugnant, repulsive, revolting, rotten, stinking, terrible, vile, wretched. Get the picture? Avoid at ALL costs!!!
