Bonoful, 15-17 Brighton Place, EH15 1LH, Edinburgh

We had a meal last Saturday in Bonoful and decided to pass on our thoughts.

Service: whilst our drink order was taken quickly, it was about 15 minutes before our meal order was taken. Overall, whilst everyone was polite, we didn't find the service particularly friendly. It was some 50 minutes after arriving before we got our starters which is just ridiculous. When we enquired/complained about the delay, we were told it would be two minutes. It was more than 10 minutes. The mains did however arrive quickly after we finished our starters. We were told that the delay was because the grill needed to heat up and that one of the starters takes a while to cook. If we had been made aware of this when we ordered, we would have ordered a different starter. We were constantly asked if we would like to buy more drink, but had to ask twice to get a glass of water.

Food: The starters we had were mixed kebab and chicken chirma? Apologies if the second one is spelt wrong but I couldn't find it on the on line menu. The mixed kebab was tasty, but very small. One piece of lamb, half a piece of sheek kebab and two bits of chicken. The pepper stuffed with chicken was nice, but mild. Mains were lamb balti and chicken chilli garlic, with two garlic nan. Whilst the balti was okay, it lacked a real depth of flavour and a couple of pieces of lamb were not as tender as the others. Despite being assured that the chilli garlic chicken would be very spicy, it wasn't. Most disappointing and again there was no depth of flavour to the dish. The nan was small. We were advised that it would be, but as well as being wee, it lacked any garlic flavour and we found it very doughy. Not great.

Restaurant: nicely laid out, clean and tasteful décor, with nice tables and chairs. The toilets are also nice and clean.

Cost: we had a voucher which covered the starters and main course and one of the nan. Cost for an additional nan was £3, wee bit dear. Cost for a pint of Cobra £4, again a bit dear. Cost for a single vodka without mixer £4, this we feel is a complete rip off. I'm sure other people will agree with us that £11 for these three items is ridiculous.

Overall we were very disappointed. Waiting time was far too long, and the food lacked real depth of flavour and spice. We are unlikely to be back.

the food here is generally great... this is our local indian restaurant and we really rate it highly although we mostly eat takeaways (the thalli deal is great value too although not available on saturdays)... on the occasions where we have been in staff have been friendly (we've been in with kids)... recommmend it mostly for the food

This is a lovely resteraunt. Not the busiest at evening times but the staff are always pleasent and the food is lovely. I would highly recomend the 'Sonali chicken'.

We ate at Bonoful with friends last weekend for a change as normally we would eat at either of the nice Indian restaurants on Morningside road, can I just say by far the BEST Indian meal we have ever had. Absolutely fantastic from the starters to desert amazing such fresh quality food and the place has recently been re-furbished - it's very contemporary and spotless. The ambiance and service first class, well done we will return!!!

Beware prejudice: I (single mum) went there a few weeks back with my 11 year old son. The food was average. The waiters, whilst quite happy to take our money, made it quite clear that we were entitled to a lower standards of service than other more "conventional" dining groups. We are made to wait for considerably longer than other diners and served after those who came after us, despite us ordering standard menu dishes. Very disappointed.

Went with a friend on a Groupon voucher. Terrible service, argumentative staff and rip off with Groupon voucher. Food was okay but shocking service and ripped off with it.

Food was excellent and different from usual however let down by the most arrrogant service I have come across in years. I ordered a beer and when my wife ordered tap water the waiter visibly scoffed.

We ordered starters and main courses with rice and nan yet he was still trying to force side dishes on us and when we said no again he was visibly annoyed.

Not once were we asked how our meal tasted.

Please don't let this put you off going as food was excellent just an ignorant waiter.

I'm not dissing the food but the service was TERRIBLE. I ordered a take away at 5.20pm and was told it would be 20 minutes. I arrived at the restaurant at 5.35 expecting to wait 5 or so minutes. The man on the till told me it would be 2 and I was pleasantly surprised. I sat down, and there were 2 other people waiting. 10 minutes later there were about 5 customers and no food appearing. At 5.50 I asked the waiter what was happening, at this point he told me there had been a problem with the tandoori oven. At no point did he think to tell all the customers waiting and maybe offer us a refreshment... I asked how long it would be and he told me again 2 minutes. I was asked by another waiter 'take a seat please' and I told him I was fed up sitting! I said I'd rather have my money back than wait any longer. None of the 4 staff appeared to be bothered by any of this at all! I left with my meal (which was pretty good although the pakora were quite dry - they were probably sitting while the tandoori oven was being fixed) at 5.58. I don't think I'll go back...

Ok food, nothing amazing, but service disappointing.

Waiter was trying to increase our order every step of the way which we found distasteful, in fact it ruined a meal out that was a treat.

£50 including 2 drinks (1 each). Ended up coming out thinking waiters are greedy and feeling fleeced.

Waiter also said did we want more drinks when we hadn't had the drinks we ordered yet, this was during our meal - no word of an apology.

By comparison, our local Indian, which in fact the food is even better, bigger portions and very cheap by comparison, run by genuine people. Wouldn't go here again.

Terrible restaurant - although the food was okay the service was very very poor.

Throughout the meal the staff were rude. We felt rushed and unwelcome throughout, it just felt like they wanted to take as much money as possible, as quickly as possible without any regard for the quality of the dining experience.

When the bill arrived I wasn’t even surprised to see that the staff had charged us for more food than we’d ordered. Only a couple of poppadoms, but we hadn’t ordered them and didn’t want them.

The portions of pickles were tiny, I’m pretty sure this also to enable them to charge more when customers asked for a top up.

We refused to pay for what we didn’t order, we had to leave cash as the staff wouldn’t accept that they shouldn’t have charged us.

Avoid this place. We are visitors but in the week we’ve been here we’ve seen two other Indian restaurants (9 Cellars and a vegetarian place - I don’t have the name), both were excellent in terms of service and food quality

I will never go back here. I strongly recommend you also try somewhere else!

The Bonoful has nice food but the staff should learn some good manners. If you go for lunch be sure to go early because come 2pm they hover around you clearing away plates which aren't finished... they clear the restaurant and send the chef away... so there is no way you can add to your order... and more or less march you out the restaurant at 2.30pm on the dot! Hardly a way to conduct a business?!

i would give this so called restaurant a '0' but at least the chairs didn't break while we sat on them.

we were told that meals would be 2 for 1, and so were appalled to find a bill of £200 for only 4 people, which is three times what we paid at another Indian restaurant called Mirchi Mirchi.

Service was extremely poor, we asked the waiter for the heating to be turned on twice but they lied and said it was on when in fact it was freezing. We were offered poppadoms which in every other restaurant are usually free so were shocked to be charged for these and the individual sauces. The food we ordered was very bland and they gave us items that we didn't actually order but they refused to take these back.

When we quizzed the waiter about the bill, he was rude and sarcastic in the way he replied, and he also charged £25 for the service which we had removed.

All in all it was the worst dining experience of our lives and we warn everyone not to eat there.

My wife called to book a table yesterday for lunch at 1pm... this is lunch time not mid afternoon! The man on the phone said it would have to be earlier? Why asked my wife? Because we close at 2pm! My wife said but we can't come any earlier! What are your lunch opening times? He said 12 - 2pm! My wife said fine but I'm booking for 1pm? He said well you would have to eat very fast! "Are you going to kick us out at 2pm sharp?" asked my wife. "Yes we have to all be out at 2pm because we open again in the evening"?! "Oh well", said my wife "we will take our custom to where it would be appreciated!". "OK, FINE!"

I cannot believe that anyone would treat a potential customer like that? Nowadays I would have thought it would be good to draw in as many customers as possible?! We have been before and the food is good but we won't be back and I agree with a previous customer who said the staff were rude. We have always found them to be rude in the past particularly at 2pm closing time, you're out whether you've finished eating and drinking or not!!!
