The Doric Tavern, 15-16 Market Street, EH1 1DE, Edinburgh

We went to the Doric Tavern on Saturday night with Edinburgh Dine Around offer at £15 per person for a 2 course meal. That was a well disappointing experience.

First of all when we arrived the waitress, who never smiled were not welcoming at all at arrival and lost our booking. Luckily enough a table for 2 was available.

Then when the starter arrives, no bread is served with the salad although there is a bread plate for each of us and I have to ask twice to get the bread served.

Started Pan fried chicken liver and bacon salad was really good. But the main, Plaice on salad with capers and dressing was really dull and the capers were missing.

We ordered a pudding and a coffee but coffee took longer because there was no more coffee. Fair enough.

AND FINALLY, THIS IS LAST TOUCH: they charged us £1 for a jug of tap water and £2 for the 4 small slices of bread!

I honestly think that any restaurant that charges you for bread and tap water should be boycotted.

This was scandalous.

I could not disagree more with the comments above. Myself, husband, mother in law and baby boy went there for Sunday lunch and it was a lovely experience. The waitress was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed for our little boy.

The restaurant was inviting and has a homely relaxing feel to it, perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

Our meals were amazing, with loads of veg and everything was home made. The main thing I can say is that the home made dessert was really something. If your a girlie and you like your sticky toffee pudding... it's definitely worth a visit.

PS. Commenting on the comment before mine... I've never gone anywhere where you get bread with a SALAD - soup maybe, but not a salad... maybe that's just me! We'll be back to the Doric anyway... xx

What a shocker!! This just wasn't good enough. We were a largish party of Edinburgh residents looking for a decent meal out at one of the City's longer established eateries. Menu a bit pricey but promising. Wine list sensible and varied. However the food arrived. Service was spasmodic leaving plates to cool as courteous diners waited for friends to be served before starting. Portions were erratic in scale of content leaving those ill-done by to seek a late 'chippie' on the way home... and with a whopping £500 bill including £45 'service charge' added. For what service? There wasn't even the offer of a top up on coffees to finish. We even had to hang up and retrieve our own coats!!! The Doric had been recommended to us (!) but we must have missed the joke. There are better places and better value to be had in Edinburgh than this! Never again!

Are the other reviewers talking about the same place or were they paid by competitors? I was there on Jan 31 with a party of 3, and all of us say that everything was perfect. Very attentive and friendly staff, perfect service, excellent 2/3 course meals, cosy ambiance - could not have been better. Warning - the desserts are likely to tempt you to overeat - they are just delicious. Outstanding value for money. I will definitely come again as soon as possible and recommend the place to my friends. Thank you very much, The Doric Staff!

I had a great time the other day at the Doric and there is a ginger-haired waitress who is extremely nice and beautiful.

The Doric Tavern, 15-16 Market Street, EH1 1DE, Edinburgh

Having researched a few restaurants in Edinburgh in anticipation of our first visit we came across the Doric and liked the menus and general look of the place. On arrival we had a drink in the (rather warm) bar downstairs and then went upstairs to be greeted by a rather dour faced lady who gave us the menus. We had looked at the summer menu as well as the A La carte menu and as I am a rather 'fussy eater' I asked for the summer menu as well, I received a very curt reply stating that menu was 2 and a half weeks old (despite it still being on the internet and also advertised in the pub window!). When I stated I didn't like anything on the (very pricey and rather limited) a la carte menu the very unhelpful waitress simply shrugged her shoulders!

At this point various other members of our party decided they didn't want to eat here out of principal as the 'waitress' (a term I use very loosely!) was rather rude. We gave her the menus back and got up to leave to be advised by the aforenmentioned woman 'you won't get in anywhere else in Edinburgh at 8.00 on a Sunday evening'. Lovely we thought and yet there were only 2 tables full at the Doric! How ironic. We left as quickly as possible and stumbled across Above @ The Abbotsford where we had superb food, excellent service in great surroundings and at a fraction of the cost of the Doric. So to the very unhelpful Australian (I think) waitress I say thank you very much. To the general public I say - do not visit the Doric, it's awful!

The Doric Tavern, 15-16 Market Street, EH1 1DE, Edinburgh

We had our work Christmas lunch here for eight people. The restaurant is shabby to start with and needs decorated. The food was not consistent in terms of portion sizes and presentation. My main course (the vegetarian option) was appalling. A filo basket stuffed with a few vegetables (mostly courgette), a handful of salad and half a tomato. I complained about this and they argued that it was difficult to add substance to a vegetarian meal. No it isn't. The staff were unpleasant. There were two coffees short. When I asked for them I was given a very curt response. When I asked for my coat I was given the response, 'Well, I don't know what your coat looks like. They are all over there'. Overall it was an extremely disappointing meal in tired surroundings with rude and unpleasant staff. I will not be back. Go elsewhere.

The Doric Tavern, 15-16 Market Street, EH1 1DE, Edinburgh

Hi, me and my wife came from France and we were in this restaurant for dinner - the food is wonderful! I have never eaten anything better. The bartender's also very nice. We don't feel the same about the waitress, however. She was able to wait long to order desserts. The waitress said she did not have time now. I went downstairs and she smoked a cigarette outside rather than serve us! The owner should get rid of this incompetent employee. I recommend this restaurant, shame about that one waitress.
