Eastern Spices, 6 Howard Street, EH3 5JP, Edinburgh

I have tried Eastern Spices at Canonmills a few times recently. It's been established for quite some time and has a decent reputation locally . At the time of writing, they have just moved premises to the other side of the road from where they have always been.

This take away establishment has the standard curry house offerings and is perhaps slightly more expensive than most. I wonder if maybe it has lost a bit of its magic? We tried Lamb Madras which I would consider tasty but not particularly hot in the spicy stakes. One of the pieces of lamb had a ridiculously sharp piece of bone through it - thankfully I spotted it before eating. The Lamb with chickpea we considered bland. Nice side dishes though including a very good tarka dall and a mushroom bhaji - the problem now being that the portions of these were a little light.

The rice and naan bread were fine if unremarkable. So, all in all, I remembered this place from some years ago as pricey but great food. Having tried many other take aways, this place just seems pricey to me now. Up the road at Goldenacre, Bengal Spice has much bigger portions, cheaper prices and much tastier curries. Maybe these guys have taken their customers for granted and lost their edge. I hope they get it back and up their game.
