Elliot's (at Apex Waterloo), 23 Waterloo Place, EH1 3BH, Edinburgh

Four of us dined in Elliot’s last night and overall very much enjoyed our food. We decided to just have an appetiser rather than a full starter so had artisan breads served with butter and an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip. The portion here was rather small for four people but probably enough as an appetiser. We were sitting chatting for quite a while and I had realised that it seemed to be a rather long wait when the manager approached our table and apologised as the chef had missed our check. I’m not sure how this happened as we were the second table to be seated in the restaurant that night and it never got extremely busy. To apologise the manager gave us a second bottle of our wine on the house, which was a nice gesture. I had the vegetarian main course which was a chargrilled vegetable tart with caramelised onion. On the menu it also included goats cheese which I asked to be replaced with an alternative cheese which wasn’t a problem at all (they gave me mozzarella). Two of the party had the pork dish which was very much enjoyed, again, not a huge portion but just enough, a hungrier body may want to add some vegetable side dishes to compliment. Also savoured was the special of the day which was smoked haddock. My dessert of 70% dark chocolate tart with orange compote and vanilla anglaise was extremely rich and I didn’t finish it but the others in the party enjoyed the steamed banana pudding with rum and raisin syrup and cinnamon ice cream along with the poached pear. In summary I think I would recommend this restaurant if you found yourself in that area of town looking for a nice place to eat but wouldn’t go out of my way to visit it.
