What a great place. From the outside it looks to be nothing more than a kebab house. In fact, when you enter it still looks like a kebab house. It is anything but!

There are 4 tables for 4 and a few counters to sit at too. The food is excellent, the portions are plentiful and the service is quick and very unobtrusive. The takeaway counter is always busy and you may get bumped once or twice if you're seated in the wrong place, but strangely this doesn't matter.

I completely disagree with foodie's comments about zero ambiance. I found it to have quite the opposite. It is the kind of place where everyone shows respect for everyone else, everyone minds their own business, nobody is too loud and people enjoy going. This was shown not only by the queue at the counter, but also by the phone ringing regularly with people placing orders and people waiting to take our seats once we had left. Again, strangely not something that you can find annoying in a place like this.

As my star rating shows, I would definitely recommend this place. And again, contrasting foodie's comments, I think a great place for a first date; it shows you have no pretensions and prioritise substance over façade.

This is one of those places that only locals will know about, so keep it secret.

Enormous portions, very inexpensive, good quality. Zero ambiance, service is efficient. In essence: a bad first date place, but great for a good quality, inexpensive meal that will really fill you up.

Totally excellent. Quality experience, authentic, really nice folk. All of the dishes look great coming out - I regularly have the Chicken Tikka Masala which is drenched in lime, amazing. Mango Lassi also great.

Best takeaway curry I've found so far in central Edinburgh. To the extent that I've not tried anywhere else since.

Chicken and dhal gets my vote!

If you find a better curry for the money in Edinburgh, please let me know! We've tried many of the other takeaways and have stuck with kebab mahal. The plain old chicken curry is the best I have ever tasted and my wife swears by the lamb karahi. Remember, if you do phone for a takeaway and they say 20 minutes, double it! They don't take your name either, so you just turn up and hope it's ready you catch their eye. Small gripe though, the food more than makes up for it.

Stopped off on the way home to pick up a couple of takeaway curries as I heard great things about this place.

I ordered a chicken madras and my partner got a chicken bhuna.

Well as far as the quality went, I couldn't fault it and the price was about the same in comparison with many other curry houses, but I felt disappointed when I lifted the lid and saw that the tray was half empty.

This was also the case with the other curry... a stingy portion.

I'm not greedy or anything, but I did fork out about £16 for this and felt disappointed.

Would still recommend the Kebab Mahal as it was an excellent curry, but be prepared for small portions.

The food here is really good Indian cuisine, even though you feel like you're sitting in a kebab shop/cafe. The food is also really cheap for the size of portions that you get. This place is usually quite busy, and even though it has it's kebab shop feel, on a Friday evening people are often queuing out of the door waiting for a table.
