Very compact place if you eat inside, but luckily this place has a terrace overlooking the Grassmarket that's rather nice. Good food, not too pricey and good service.

Maxie's Bistro, 5b Johnston Terrace, EH1 2PW, Edinburgh

Just had a fantastic meal in a lovely setting underneath the castle in Maxies Bistro. Very narrow entrance leads down a small staircase almost cave like. And when you walk into what could be an old wine cellar with bare stone walls, whilst still warm and cosy. The service was quick and pleasant with the specials being pointed out, prices are excellent with starters around the £5 mark, mains between £10 and £20 and a beer £3 and large glass of wine £6. All in all we had 3 courses, one beer and a large wine for £50. Very relaxing and well tended to by the attentive staff. If you're a regular in the new town "posh" eateries or the back street bistros off Thistle Street you MUST visit Maxies. I am annoyed now that I never discovered this gem years ago.
