Rhubarb, Prestonfield House Hotel, EH16 5UT, Edinburgh

Top class restaurant - the decoration could be like in a museum!

Go there if you want to impress. Service is brilliant as the food is.

TIP: Food is really expensive but only £13 for a 2 course lunch!!!

Then you can go for a nice walk in the country park.

Rhubarb, Prestonfield House Hotel, EH16 5UT, Edinburgh

When the in-laws visit, it's become traditional to go somewhere "nice" for dinner one night, this time round it was Rhubarb and the bar for "nice" has been raised to a whole new level.

Impeccable from start to finish, there really is nothing to fault. The venue, staff and food were all immaculate and I discovered my vocabulary was woefully short of superlatives!

The a la carte menu had a great selection of dishes but not so many items as to make it overwhelming. We were also offered the £30 fixed price menu that's being offered at all James Thomson’s restaurants in Edinburgh this year. One of the party plumped for the fixed price and while those dishes were excellent, there was a distinct sense of envy when they were compared to the a la carte dishes so consider carefully!

I had been wary of trying Rhubarb as some of the online reviews are not entirely flattering but I wish I’d decided to evaluate it for myself much sooner. If you’re looking for a top notch meal in a top notch setting, you need look no further.

Rhubarb, Prestonfield House Hotel, EH16 5UT, Edinburgh

Had the pleasure of eating at Rhubarb the other evening this being the third time we have eaten there but the first time in the evening. After the usual formal but very polite greeting we were shown into the cosy lounge for pre dinner drinks and to peruse the menu.

My partner had scallops to start and the duck as main course. Being a vegetarian myself the only choice for me was the soup followed by a cauliflower puree dish.

My partners’ food was very well presented and tasted extremely pleasant the scallops tender and the duck perfectly pink. My vegetarian options were a great disappointment, the soup was I believe parsnip and although pleasant in the texture department was very bland and the cauliflower puree was absolutely tasteless. It could have been something purchased at Iceland and deep fried before serving.

My partner had a chocolate based pudding which was very acceptable and I had the 4 cheeses which were served on a grey slate platter. All very nice but the waiter just put them in front of me said bon appétit and left. No explanation of what or where the cheeses were from.

Also they ask you whilst taking your order if you would like water with the meal but fail to inform you that they provide jugged water as a matter of course thus many of the diners are duped into purchasing very expensive bottled water.

The service the evening we were there deserved an 8.5/10, the ambience 9.5/10, the food (non-vegetarian) 8/10, the food (vegetarian) 2.5/10 and value for money 5/10.

If you are going to pay over fifty pound per head excluding wine/drinks and gratuities there are definitely better restaurants in Edinburgh. Try the Balmorals No.1

I got married here so am a bit biased. But it's a great place, great food, top-class service, superb atmosphere, and not stuffy in the least. Just sheer class and quality really.

A top place to go and treat yourself every now and again.

What can I say, the food is absolutely superb as you would expect from a 5 star hotel. It is only a 10 minute drive from Edinburgh city centre and yet you can easily imagine to be in the Highlands. The interior of the hotel is absolutely beautiful and very grand! Lunch menus are well priced but for the evening the food does become a little pricier. The staff also are very friendly and attentive!
