For an Italian restaurant this is ok. The prices are reasonable and they do a pre-theatre dinner which is good value but I wouldn't overly recommend this to anyone when there are better Italians on offer further into town. It gets alot of local trade so people obviously like it and keep going but if you are looking for a good Italian I would try La Favourita, Valvona & Crolla or Vittorias further into town.

A group of 13 of us went to San Marco’s for a friend’s birthday on Friday night. I live across the road and this was my first ever visit, I have been to Franco’s the take away shop next door though so I knew that the pizzas were going to be gooooooooood!

Our food was all really yummy– I had the Hawaiian pizza, they got my order muddled but it was rectified without any problems. It did mean I had to wait a bit longer for my main course but I didn’t mind. Pizzas are big and pretty cheap too (think all of them are under a tenner) whereas meat and fish dishes looks to be around the £12 mark. They had a fish special of sea bass on for less than £10 too – very reasonable.

We got through a lot of litre bottles of wine which were about £12 a bottle.

Service was fantastic – it was a bit like an Italian restaurant that you see in the movies – the staff were great fun and really made our evening. We even got a strip tease from one of the members of staff which was hilarious. The restaurant for the whole night was buzzing and we were there for about 3 hours!

Including tip we each paid £22 – it was a great night and I would definitely go back, especially with a big group of friends.

Review 1 - It's been a while since I was there but I thought the Calzone was brilliant - one of the very best in town. And truly tremendous service.

Review 2 - Came here last week for the first time in years with sister. I had Avocado San Marco followed by Calzone; she had Basil/Mozarella/Tomato thing and Pasta dish.

We had a bottle of sparkling water and bottle of Bardolino (£16.95).

My starter very good - a mix of avocado, prawns, smoked salmon, Marie Rose & salad. Sister very happy with both her dishes.

Calzone was not as good as I remembered, not as packed out as I remember and with the watery insides thing going on. What causes that? Is it off-season/poor quality tomatoes full of water? It was tasty otherwise but not the seminal calzone of yore.

I ordered black coffee. I got filter coffee. This is wrong. I would expect an Italian restaurant to know the difference between black coffee and filter coffee. I managed to explain it to the waiter eventually and got, more or less, what I wanted.

We had 2 coffees each and the total bill was £57.

All in all, quite good but I'm not as pumped about the place as I once was.

You go to a restaurant for good food, anything else is a bonus. The food quality is fantastic, the service the same and the help you get when you order something off the menu is brilliant. Price-wise too is exceptional value for money.

I have been hundreds of times and never ever been disappointed.

Very highly recommended.

Best pizza and bruschetta I'd had in a long time. And the portion sizes were good for my deceptively small stomach.
