The Voodoo Rooms, 19a West Register Street, EH2 2AA, Edinburgh

I went here for dinner last night with a friend using my List card (2 for 1 on each course you eat). To get our monies worth we ended up going all out and having a 3 course meal. The menu is quite limited, there are about 4/5 choices for each course which a selection of sandwiches as well which you wouldn’t really expect on a dinner menu.

For starter I had bruschetta with roasted tomatoes, peppers, olives and mozzarella. I asked the wait staff if I could have it without the olives and they happily obliged which was good, my dinner companion went for the haggis spring rolls with sweet chilli sauce which looked good although as it was cut in half it did look like it had dried out a bit. The starters prices varied quite a bit I think mine was around £3/4 whilst the haggis spring rolls were around £6.

For mains we both went for the special - which was scallops with bacon, spring onion on a bed of spinach. Before we ordered we did ask if it was a main or starter as the price on the specials board was £6.50 so was slightly deceiving as most mains are between £8-12. We were told it was a main portion though and we decided to order some fries as a side to share between us - glad we did as although the main was amazing I would have been disappointed if I hadn’t had a starter and that was the only part of the meal I was getting as the portion size was not that great. The quality was very good though.

For pudding I went for the sticky toffee pudding and my friend went for chocolate torte and both were finished quite quickly so yes they were food. The sticky toffee pudding again could have been a bit warmer but I still managed to polish it off pretty quickly.

Overall the food was good - for 3 courses and 2 soft drinks we paid £25 (this was a 2-1 meal though). I would go back however for the place not being that busy our service was very slow but for last night we didn’t mind as we had a lot to catch up on.

I have to agree with Andy. I liked the design and ambience of the place but I was a bit disappointed with the menu - I had trouble picking what to eat as there was little that interested me. I ended up having a shrimp stack, which didn't really taste of anything. It was also more expensive than comparable venues.

I would go back to the Voodoo Rooms as it is a nice setting and the cocktails were pretty good but I don't think I would eat there again. They also had a pretty good DJ playing on the Sunday evening that I went.

This bar opened tucked away above Cafe Royal at the east end of Princes Street not long before Christmas. We went for lunch on a Saturday in the new year. I'd heard good reports about it as a bar so was looking forward to trying it out for a bite of lunch.

The menu isn't really ideal for a quick, cheap lunch. It's a bit pricey. We both opted for the steak sandwich from the small sandwiches part of the main menu. It was about the cheapest thing at a tenner. There were a few side dishes at the back of the cocktails menu but not enough to constitute a meal.

The food was fine but certainly not exceptional. Nicely presented with the steak arriving between two pieces of toasted bread and packaged up like a parcel in string. The chunky potato wedges looked good but were a too big and a bit bland as a result. The green leaf salad was good though and had a nice honey dressing - no cheap coleslaw in sight.

To drink we asked for a free gin cocktail that we read about in a free magazine. It was vile.

The place certainly looks the part and I'm looking forward to going back in the evening sometime. But I'll give the food and cocktails a miss and get myself a pint!

I went here for dinner last Friday night and it was OK. I had linguini as a main which was fine but nothing special - it was a decent size and hit the spot.

My dining partners had the haddock and chips which they assured me was nice. Mains were approximately £8-£12.

Service was not so great - the girl waitress we had was pretty rude. She seemed confused by the fact we wanted "house wine" and kept acting us to specify - how annoying.. if we wanted to specify we wouldn't have said house wine!

Overall, it was fine, but I wouldn't rush back. Better for some drinks instead.

I had booked a table at the Voodoo Rooms as my friend was putting an event on there (Kabarett, a dark caberet and burlesque club, if anyone's interested!). Booking was completed online, swiftly and efficiently. My only slight complaint would be that I was not told when booking that it would be a set menu.

The set menu itself was very good value at £14.50 for three courses. I plumped for the baby squid in creole batter, risotto primavera and apple and rhubarb crumble. The calamari were plump and sweet, with not a hint of rubber. The batter was pleasantly spicy and the garlicky mayonnaise nice and tart in contrast. The risotto was beautifully presented, with peppers and spinach and had a gorgeous creamy consistency. Topped with a Parmesan crisp, this dish was my dish of the evening - I thoroughly enjoyed it. The crumble was exactly that - crumble, topped with rich vanilla ice-cream. The portions were just the right size to leave us feeling full but not uncomfortably full. All in all I was impressed.

So, to sum up - good value for money, good wholesome food, good sized portions. :)

I went there for a lunch special offer last Saturday and it was a mixed bag. I had the burger which was large and delicious, but all the sandwiches (4 ordered) came with french fries rather than the chunky chips billed on the menu. This was a huge disappointment as they were lukewarm and hinted of something they may have purchased at a famous fast food restaurant around the corner. When we asked the waitress what happened to the chunky chips, as we'd seen the only other dining booth next to us get a plateful minutes earlier, she asked if we wanted to get the kitchen to peel some potatoes and make some up. Maybe we should've said yes.

Went for dinner last saturday night (six of us) and it was generally a pretty good experience, the food and service were all good except for the spagehtti carbonara which had far too much pepper in it (almost complete peppercorns)... they took that off the bill and apologised.

Anyway, I'd have to recommend the t-bone steak - it's huge! I'd definitely go back.

Food was very good albeit expensive, and cocktails excellent. However, waitress was extremely rude. Most of the staff seemed fine, but this particular one just didn't want to be there. She actually put me off ordering more drinks.
