Two Thin Laddies, 103 High Riggs, EH3 9RP, Edinburgh
A Sunday morning stroll across the Meadows and over to Two Thin Laddies for one of their exquisite breakfast dishes cannot be beaten.
A smallish cafe on a corner, with tables outside for smokers, the premise of Two Thin Laddies is that they offer high quality home cooked food, freshly prepared with excellent quality ingredients, and no fuss.
The ambience is excellent, with tables set a fair distance apart from each other, a good chance of getting a window seat, and complimentary newspapers. Music plays lightly in the background, and it's always something middle-of-the-road such as Fleetwood Mac or the Beautiful South, nothing too strenuous as you pour over the Guardian with a hot cup of coffee and bleary Sunday-morning eyes.
Their menu is fairly extensive, with a whole host of options for vegetarians, and some standard tried-and-tested main dishes, such as homemade chilli or pasta-bake, and a healthy selection of daily specials on the blackboard. Behind the counter, there is a gentle clatter and bustle as the dishes are prepared, proving their promise of fresh home-cooking. There is also a good selection a sandwiches, wraps, paninis, and salads. However, for me, it is the breakfast dishes that make Two Thin Laddies stand out from the crowd. Try their sausage and egg on toast, and you are served lightly toasted and buttered freshly cut bread, with locally-sourced and beautifully seasoned sausages, topped with a perfectly fried egg. Cannot be beaten, especially if you help it down with a coffee and a pint of fresh orange and Lemonade. An excellent hangover-beater.
The place is always busy, but never loud as everyone is there for the same reason: a chilled and laid back atmosphere. The staff are always smiling and friendly, and their pace is as laid-back as the diners, which can be a bit off-putting if it's busy as waiting times can be overly long. But hey, there are other places to go if you're in a rush.
Overall, Two Thin Laddies is a wonderful little find, slightly off the beaten track, but all the better for it. I can heartily recommend!
